I started a new series of work last week. I wanted to visually make works that seemed cleaner. Less is more. I have always loved creating backgrounds that have a soft textured wall with an almost industrial feel. I also really wanted to focus on the creatures themselves. Spending a little more time painting the details. Below is the result.
(Above): Detail shots while painting. (Below): Both finished paintings side by side.
'Searching' / acrylic on canvas / 24x18' **available

Two Commissioned works...
For some reason I think I forgot to post these. Every now and then I get asked to paint commission pieces. Sometimes it's for something I've never painted which is always a departure and a fun challenge. Below are two examples I recently painted for clients.
This piece was commissioned by my friend Kasey Kirby who is a great director of photography and editor on various film projects. The piece was based on the verse Romans 4:18. Basically dealing with the loss of hope. The dark forces and the good force. This was my interpretation.
This next piece (below) dealt with a storm and ocean waves. Both I had never painted before but I enjoyed painting the wave details. The piece was for an Alaskan Fisherman who spends most of his life on the ocean and loves pirates.
If you have an idea or fun project you need help visualizing don't hesitate to contact me. www.patrickmaxcyart.com

Pittsburgh/Philadelphia recap...
Once again, I traveled. Did a bunch of stuff & now here it is in a nutshell. I flew to Pittsburgh, PA. My wife & I stayed with some of her family. Made our own pizza, viewed the city, went to a science museum, visited the strip, went to a fish market, watched movies, had an italian party, went hiking in the woods, chased deer and wild turkey, ate a ton of amazing food.
I randomly take photos when I'm inspired. A few Pittsburgh examples...
We took an 8hour train ride over to Philadelphia. Drifting in & out while seeing old rail lines, falling timbers, beautiful rushing streams, dilapidated homes, abandoned vehicles, colorful foliage, random creatures, jagged cliffs... a forgotten past.We got to Philly and it rained for a few days. So I started quickly sketching a few random people from the late 1800's. I found them creepy and intriguing while we stayed in an old historic home that week.
Ran around Philadelphia. Visited Isaiah Zagar's amazing "Magic Gardens", Ate more good food, My wife took here huge medical board exam (the reason we went), visited the creepy Medical Mutter museum, Saw some of Albert Einstein's brain, drank coffee, walked around town, hiked into the woods, and finally on the last day I dropped my camera on a rock and over a mini waterfall. I managed to save these images but the camera was gone. :(
We flew home to jump right back into our lives. Glad to be home.

Travel & wood shop...
Quick update. I am leaving in the morning and flying to Pittsburgh. Staying there for a few days and then taking a train to Philadelphia. I haven't been on a train since I was a little fella'. So I'm looking forward to this trip across Pennsylvania. Possibly hoping up to Manhattan one night as well. It's going to be a fun new adventure. If anyone has any suggestions of things I should see or do in either place, just let me know.
I also have been playing around with several new project ideas. Ways to get more art out to more people. I spent sometime in the workshop with my carpenter friend Sanding, sawing, drilling, etc. We built some new frames and other wooden objects for future projects. More to come soon. Enjoy the sneak peek...

New painting...
"Unforeseen Journey" / acrylic on canvas / 30x24"
I worked off & on this piece for the last year. It was a piece I wanted to do for sometime. I researched and chose specific animals for this piece to tell the story. Including a Blue-crowned Motmot, a Scops Owl, a sparrow, a Spectacled Warbler, a Scarlet Minivet, an Arctic Narwhal, and the Monarch Butterfly. Capturing the beauty and the sadness into one scene was the goal.

Traveling Pt.2
...After a week in Colorado I flew to New York for another full week. This was my 10th time there so I stayed out of the main tourist areas. Stayed with some amazing friends, Armistead & Elisa, in Brooklyn. Did several days of just visiting art galleries. Small shows, major shows, an art overload. Met up with so many good friends I hadn't seen in awhile. Sketched a few animals at the Natural History Museum. Ate good food. Too much to list it all.
I decided to take a walk through a cemetery in Brooklyn. It was extremely amazing. It was 100+ acres and I became immersed in it for almost 2 hours. Graves even from the early 1800's. Not realizing it closed at a certain time, I actually ended up getting locked inside.
I continued to visit galleries. Even met up with one of my old art students and checked out a few shows. Saw work from Kris Kulski, Ron English, Ana Bagayan, Travis Louie, Brian Despain, Alex Gross, Victor Castillo, etc. I even got to stop by and hang out with one of my favorite artists, Martin Wittfooth. Seeing new prints and his current works for his upcoming solo show. Pretty amazing time once again.

Traveling Pt.1
Traveling for 2 weeks. Did too many things to fit into one blog. So here's the first part of the trip. First week: Denver in a nutshell...
Flew from South Florida to Colorado. Ate a ton of sushi then got working on the Japanese artist, Tomomi's solo show. Hanging, lighting, setting-up, etc. Opening night was packed and full of friendly faces.
Went up in the mountains. Chased antelope. Looked at several amazing small cabins. Dreamed of staying in one for awhile. Played in the snow. Visited the real South Park. Ate good food. Enjoyed the amazing views. drew several small drawings. Visited a local high school and talked about artwork with the students. Rocked out on the piano with my buddy Brad.
Went to a MLS game: Columbus vs. Colorado. Sat super close. Watched Neverending Story on Bluray! Sat around a campfire into the night with close friends. Howled at coyotes. Visited the Garden of the Gods. Climbed massive rocks. Drove through the mountains. Prayed for Japan. Very grateful for my life & my Colorado friends.
... After 6days there I flew to NYC. To be continued ...

4,410+ miles in the sky...
I leave on Wednesday for two weeks to Denver, CO then heading to New York.

I have been working on numerous design projects for an art show involving the Japanese artist Tomomi. About 3years ago my friend Brad Corrigan saw Tomomi's work in Japan. He loved the creative innocents of it all. Also the fact that she creates work "To help make sad kids happy" was a great thing. She also had never sold a piece of artwork. So he bought all her work with a promise to share her work with others! I've helped designed all the stickers, posters, logos, fonts, flyers, notepads, etc. I will also be helping set up the show for the opening March 8th at the Beacon Gallery in Denver. See you soon Denver!

More info on the New York p(art) of the trip in the next update...
